Energetic Enthusiasm

An active interest or excitement about an idea, some work a person is doing is defined as  Enthusiasm’ in dictionaries. Very often, we may have to do things , which are not of our interest or passion or liking. But, by putting in an enthusiasm in our efforts, we can do better. Kolis , Fish and Mumbai

Fishing and men have an historic relationship. Fishing is one of the oldest hereditary occupations. Be it sea, be it a river or a pond- fishing for food, fishing for fun, fishing for trade, fishing has always been there. The fishing villages, fishing countries have a fabulous history.

India , with her long coastal peninsula and mighty rivers like the Ganga, Narmada, Godavari has a wide variety of fishing zones. Mumbai- originally a cluster of seven islands , later reclaimed, was a fishing heaven. It’s earliest inhabitants have been the people of the fishing community – the ‘ Kolis ‘.

The ‘ Kolis ‘ are famous for their fish , food, dance, songs, flamboyance , jewellery,  koyta ( a weapon, a type of question mark shaped cutting and chopping knife) and courage. They wear colorful dresses , jewellery and sing some melodious songs too. Their songs are known as ‘ Koli Geetay ‘ . Many music companies have recorded these renditions and  some of them are popular even amongst the people who don’t understand their language…Their dance form known as ‘ Koli Nrutya ‘ (‘ Koli Dance ‘) is a vivacious, fast dance form. They revere the sea a lot. They celebrate ‘ Narali Purnima'(a festival ) by offering coconut to the sea. It is a day of thanking the sea.

The men fish ,while the women of the community are the ones who sell the fish and other sea food in the marketplace. Traditionally, this has been followed for ages. Now, people from their community are seeking education in many fields and venturing into many different professions.

Now, Mumbai is a melting pot of cultures. But a vivacious Koli family will always have a significant historic place in the cultural canvas of the city -Mumbai.

Being a vegetarian, I don’t eat fish. But I have always loved and respected the courage of the fishermen . They risk their lives for every fishing trip…

Now, a few verses for the fish eaters and lovers:

It is a blessing :

To enjoy an afternoon siesta in the shady lawns

After having a delicious dish of prawns…

To make the taste buds feel great

After eating the very dear pomfret…

To hold and grab

The plate of crab…

To forget the studious semester

And feast on the lovely lobster….

It is a blessing to Eat Fish…

A maddening threat- Stay calm…

Life is not easy for many. Instead of clicking the maddening button, it really helps to be patient, assertive and calm in difficult situations.  A calm mind can create miracles. It can extinguish the maddening fears, insecurities, negativities. A calm mind can think rationally and ideate a highly creative solution too.

It is not easy. There will be frustrations, rejections, dejections, disappointments, failures, sorrows, pains. But a Survivor’s instinct can generate wonders…

So, when the maddening threat challenges us, why not make a sincere attempt to defeat it with calmness, wisdom, creativity and agility ?

An innocent baby’s Conundrum

Conundrum- a difficult problem to solve , a riddle are the dictionary meanings of the word. What an appealing word! I could hear the drums of noisy , thoughts with its pronunciation.

A baby’s conundrum:

1) Why do these elders think , I like only cartoons and nursery rhymes? (I also like Salman Khan and Manisha Koirala of Bollywood , Sylvester Stallone and Meryl Streep of Hollywood- eye candies!!!)

2) Why do these elders think I am sleepy, if I yawn? ( I can also yawn because of their boring banter…..)

3) Why do these elders think I have to wear mittens, gloves, sweaters and every possible woolen they can lay their hands on? ( I ask them sheepishly)

4) Why do these elders think I should be served super soft food, even if I have some Calcium symbols ( Teeth ) to flaunt? ( There has to be some Crispiness in life)

5) Why do these elders think I don’t understand their complex talks? ( They can be very stupid and immature as well)

6) Why do these elders smile and nod ,as if they have understood everything during my baby talk ? (when I am actually telling them to mind their business and give me some space… )

7) Why do these elders take me to be pricked?( Those Vaccines …Oops…Painful memories)

8) Why do these elders…..🤔

The baby conundrum continues….

Bye for now,

Innocent Baby 😇

She fled…

He loved the woman of his dreams. He waited for her acceptance. She simply couldn’t decide.

He decided to marry someone else. He married someone else. He tried to love her. He couldn’t accept someone else whole-heartedly. She remained someone else for him. Someone else loved him. She could feel his dilemma, his distance, his desire to be with that illusional lady of his dreams, his distress. She , herself , was stressed. She struggled . She craved for a happy life. He desired perfection. She tried and failed. She couldn’t satisfy his high standards and high expectations. She decided to flee. She decided to fly. She fled to fly. She didn’t know her destination. But, she decided to set him free from the  unwanted relationship with someone else.

She paved the way for his freedom.  After all, he wanted her out of his life, but couldn’t express himself. She took the flight and put an end to each other’s plight….

There could have been a different turn. If he would have accepted her whole- heartedly, gradually….Both of them would have made more effort to be patient with each other….

She fled…

Memories -My treasure forever, for sure….

A treasure is a collection of valuable, precious objects, events, occasions, values. It can be intangible as well. Memories is one such intangible treasure, which can be a wonderful treasure. As long as a person is alive, the memories will be with him.

A few verses:

They may seize my house,

But not my hands which made it a ‘home’….

They may snatch my jewellery,

But not my smiles and joys, I enjoyed basking in their glory…..

They may misappropriate cash,

But, they can’t deny it without batting an eyelash…

They may take away the person I love,

But they can’t love him the way I love….

They may destroy all the symbols of my cherished memories,

But they can’t destroy the memories in my mind….

People, places, seasons, styles may change and/or leave. Memories are for life…So, memories are my treasure forever, for sure …..

Memories -My treasure forever, for sure….

In Conversation With A Martyr…

History lecture was in progress. The teacher was explaining the concept of Martyrs and Martyrdom to her students. Kaveri was an analytical , intelligent child. She was stunned by the sacrificing nature of Martyrs and freedom fighters of India. The lecture was over. But Kaveri simply couldn’t stop thinking.

She wanted to understand which qualities made Martyrs different from the rest? She was feeling restless. Her mind was not ready to relax. She decided to put down  her thoughts on paper.

She imagined a conversation between a Martyr and Kaveri- herself. She named her fictional Martyr as Devika.

Devika: Namaskar, Kaveri

Kaveri: Namaskar, Devika. You sacrificed your life for the country.

Devika: Yes.

Kaveri: Why did you do it? Didn’t you love your life?

Devika: I loved my life. But, I was also focused on the concept of Independence for the country. I could foresee many benefits for my countrymen, an improvement in their quality of life.

Kaveri: Hmmm…But didn’t you fear death?

Devika: I feared the pain of having to live in an autocratic, uncertain world. I didn’t plan to be a Martyr. However, I was mentally prepared for all the consequences.

Kaveri: Are you happy with the way our country has developed?Do you think we are using our freedom well?

Devika: Yes ,to some extent. I think many  citizens are not aware of rights and duties. The willingness to learn about rights and duties is also not very bright….

Kaveri: Do you regret sacrificing your life?

Devika: No, I did what I thought was my duty. I have no regrets. I lived life as per my terms, my values, my vision. How many people can do that?

Kaveri: What would be your advice to the next generations ?

Devika: Live your life. Follow your dreams. Learn, Laugh, Love yourself. Be clear of your values, aims. Be responsible for your actions. Do not abuse. Do not tolerate any abuse either…All the best…

Kaveri: Thanks a lot. Salute to you.

Devika: Goodbye, I hope your mind is relaxed now…

Kaveri: Yes….

In Conversation With A Martyr…

When she vanished….

There she is….

She uses her tongue to spit venom,

She uses her eyes to destroy decorum

There she is….

She uses her ears to hear nonsense,

She uses her nose to unearth the ‘intense’….

There she is…..

She uses her touch to create fear,

She uses her sixth sense to vanish anything dear….

There she is….

A woman who finds pleasure in belittling others,

A woman who sheds ‘crocodile tears ‘….

There she is….

A woman who fires her taunts,

A woman who uses them as flaunts…..

There she is….

A woman who tarnishes her victim’s image,

A woman who echoes sadistic pleasure at every stage…..

Here she is…..

The victim gathers courage,

She sets herself free from the torture cage……

The victim banishes HER….

From her life,

The victim also vanishes from that woman’s life…..

She is happy and relieved,

She is glad to have relived

The missed moments of life….

Time will heal her emotional blemishes,

Work and duties will absorb and act as varnishes….

Else where…

When she vanished….
