The traditional Mother tongue

Traditions are passed on from one generation to the other. Countries, communities,  cultures, climates, geographical factors, education, friends, company, corporates, , entertainment, Business , arts, different industries have their own traditions and customs. At an individual level too, a person follows certain traditions and rituals.

A person ‘s mother tongue is a major connecting medium for traditions. When a person knows his / her mother tongue, he/ she can effectively communicate with scholars, wise men and women, knowledgeable persons , even those , who may not be well versed in other National/ official language, but know the mother tongue  well. The old texts, scriptures, literature, poetry , which may be available , in his mother tongue ,  is also accessible to him.

For example, my mother tongue is Marathi. Marathi has a rich, ancient, progressive, evolving , accommodating culture. It has a wonderful legacy of a variety of arts, valour, courage, bravery, warriors, freedom fighters, social reformers, educationists, medicinal experts, sportsmen…  It’s Literature is broad based. A Maharashtrian who knows Marathi will have an added advantage of learning about Maharashtra, Marathi and Maharashtrians, thereby strengthening his roots, grasping the good traditions.

Be it the books of legends like Gangadhar Gadgil, P. L. Deshpande, Shanta Shelke or the musical compositions of Sudhir Phadke, Ajay- Atul or the master strokes of Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar or the Invincible Warrior Star ( Ajinkya Tara ) Peshwa Bajirao-I  or the supreme Sacrifice , confidence, courage of Swatantryaveer Damodar Savarkar or the histrionics of Neelu Phule, Arun Sarnaik … The list is endless.

Similarly, the aartis, keertans, bhajans, abhang, shlokas – musical, lyrical  compositions of religious  nature are beautiful , soul searching renditions in the mesmerizing language.  So are the ukhanas, powadas, lavnis, tamasha, koligeet….

So, Maharashtrians, don’t forget to learn Marathi, it will be a Memorable Journey in the vast ocean of knowledge…..
